Explore Georgetown

Spend a day exploring Georgetown County’s museums and historic sites to learn about the history, stories, and people that helped shape the American Revolution. Special programming and discounted admission will be offered at each of the following participating sites. All participating sites will be open from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

Gullah Museum:  Stop by the Gullah Museum of Georgetown to learn about the rich history and culture of the Gullah Geechee people and how they shaped America from the Colonial period to today. The museum will offer free activities for children, such as Gullah doll-making, a scavenger hunt, coloring sheets, and games. Georgetown County Museum: Explore the rich history of Georgetown County from its origins to the present. Children will have the opportunity to make and take a toy as a hands-on activity to learn about the toys children may have played with during the Colonial period. Admission is free.

Hopsewee Plantation: Hopsewee will be open with tours of the Hopsewee House on the hour from 10:00 to 3:00.  Museum open throughout the day and serving in the tearoom from 11:00 to 2:30.  Britton’s Neck Militia will be on site with demonstrations and colonial discussions. Hobcaw Barony: The Discovery Center will be open regular hours, 9 am-5 pm, with exhibits and docents available to assist attendees. There will be a scavenger hunt, coloring, and more for children. The Discovery tour will be offered at 10 am and again at 11 am. This 2-hour tour of the property is done via a 12-person van. Cost is $30.00. Participants will ride down Old Kings Highway (Francis Marion), visit Friendfield African American Village, learning about rice growing in the very early years of our country, and the role enslaved Africans played. Hobcaw will also be offering a 3-hour “Revolutionary” Explore Tour for $40.00 beginning at 1:30 pm-4:30 pm. The tour includes going out to the salt marsh at Oyster Landing, discussing Native American presence on the property, and looking across to North Island, where Lafayette landed. Kaminski House Museum: The house will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm with stationed docents to share intriguing tales of South Carolinians who shaped our past. The Kaminski House will be offering a discounted flat admission rate of $8 for all visitors. 1003 Front Street, Georgetown, SC. www.kaminskihouse.org

Maritime Museum: Located in the historic heart of Georgetown, the South Carolina Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting our state’s unique maritime history and heritage. From fossils to shipwreck artifacts, to models and the prized 5th Order Fresnel lens from the Georgetown Lighthouse, there’s something for everyone. Tom Yawkey Center: A special bus trip will be offered, highlighting Revolutionary War sites on the property, including the Cat Island Fort, Revolution-era house sites, and a discussion of North Island and the Lafayette landing. These trips will be free but limited to 14 people each. Reservations are required. Two time slots are available: 10:00 –12:00 or 1:00 – 3:00. The Rice Museum: Located in the Old Market Building behind the iconic Clock and in the adjacent Kaminski Hardware Building, the Rice Museum exhibits a permanent collection of dioramas, maps, paintings, artifacts, and other displays that tell the history of rice cultivation in Georgetown County.
